McCaw Cellular Communications Inc and the PacTel Corp unit of Pacific Telesis Group Inc say they have now received regulatory approval to combine their cellular interests in San Francisco, San Jose, Dallas and Kansas City into a 99-year joint venture (will they really still be using cellular phones in 2092?): McCaw and PacTel will each have equal ownership of the joint venture, which will also include some properties adjacent to the four cities; PacTel will also buy McCaw’s Wichita and Topeka, Kansas property, which covers a population of 614,000, for $100m, and is also contributing its 34% interest, or a licensed population area of 1.4m in Dallas to the joint venture; the moves will create two large cellular clusters covering 9.2m people.
