The Supercomputing Centre of Catalonia, CESCA, and the European Centre of Parallelism in Barcelona, CEPBA, are participating in the European Human Capital Mobility programme to encourage staff to move between different European Community centres. The two centres will receive $742,000 to $1.1m financial aid from the National Research & Development Plan in order to connect them together with optical fibre. At present, there are four supercomputing centres in Spain – in Andalusia, the Basque country, Galicia, and Catalonia. They are all undertaking European initiatives, co-ordinated by the Ministry of Education and Science. CEPBA, which is part of Barcelona’s Polytechnical University, is carrying out basic research into applications for parallel computers, and has participated in 14 Esprit projects.
