SunSelect Inc is said to have shipped a pre-beta version of its Wabi software to OEM customers, but it requires pieces of Windows or an MS-DOS emulator to run Windows applications under Unix. The company is not letting the thing out for review, because it is scared of Microsoft Corp’s response. Apparently, if a Windows application doesn’t have Windows Help, Dynamic Data Exchange and Object Linking & Embedding, users must run Windows to enable Wabi to work. Four of the 14 Windows applications that will run under the initial version of Wabi don’t have these components. SunSelect says that the full Wabi 1.0 release, due next month, will not require Windows. Others say a Windows or MS-DOS emulator will be required until Wabi 1.X ships later in the year or in early 1994. Wabi’s competitor, the forthcoming Microsoft-blessed SoftWindows from Insignia Solutions Ltd, will however, require a MS-DOS emulator.
