British Telecommunications Plc, thwarted in its ambitions to expand overseas after WorldCom Corp snapped up MCI Corp from under its nose, faces a new threat to its home market with Mercury making a bid for its business customers. Mercury, part of Cable & Wireless Communications, is launching multi-line number portability, so that businesses can leave BT without changing their number. It claims that a firm which switches to its services will make big savings on calls.
