Advanced Micro Devices Inc was due to launch its faster, lower power alternative to Intel Corp’s top-selling 80386SX microprocessor yesterday. The Am386SX is clocked at 25MHz against the 20MHz and 16MHz originals from Intel, and crucially for the makers of laptop and notebook computers that are the biggest users of the 80386SX, it draws 35% less power, but costs about the same as the $90 Intel charges for its 20MHz version. Advanced Micro also has a 20MHz version and a power-conserving version for laptops. It is sampling the 25MHz Am386SX now and promises to start shipping in large volumes by the end of June. The part could be a lifesaver for small companies that have been at the back of the queue for the Intel parts. Orchid Technology Inc, Fremont and Bell Computer Systems Inc, Los Angeles will use it.
