The UK’s third party computer maintenance market managed modest growth last year, and is now valued at UKP626m. According to Third Party Computer Maintenance, 1992, published by Maidenhead, Berkshire-based Romtec Plc, the top 10 maintenance companies accounted for 47% of revenue. The mid-range companies performed weakly, due to aggressive competition from computer vendors, but those maintenance companies specialising in personal computers performed well. No indications that competitive pressures are easing, this being compounded by the numbers of users still maintaining their equipment in-house – 14%, up from 10%, say that they are doing their own maintenance, while 71% of personal computer sites and 48% of mainframe sites would be prepared to consider an alternative supplier.
