Texas Instruments Inc, Fujitsu Ltd, Hitachi Ltd and Sony Corp have gone back to economic first principles and agreed a division of labour in the development of a chip set that is intended to crash the cost of high definition television sets to the Japanese Muse standard – currently selling for a prohibitive $30,000. Texas will be doing the frame memory store, Fujitsu the signal processors, Sony the analogue components, and Hitachi audio circuits. The full Muse chip set will consist of about 30 parts, and it is scheduled to be completed during the first quarter of 1992.
