Motorola Inc’s Motorola Codex unit claims to be shipping over 250 326XFast modems a month in the UK and Ireland and is predicting a steady rise to over 350 per month by the end of the year. The 326XFAST modem is based on proposed V.Fast technology and is said to provide synchronous transmission speeds of 24Kbps and asynchronous transmission speeds of up to 115.2Kbps. Meantime Sonix Communications Ltd, Cirencester, Gloucerstershire estimates that it is shipping 200 V.32terbo modems a month in the UK, and expects this to rise through the rest of the year. According to the company, direct sales comparisons should be qualified by the fact that Sonix has only been shipping the modem product since December last year. Bob Jones of Sonix has said that the company might well be prepared to implement the V.Fast Class interim modem standard if Rockwell International Inc would publish it. Jones says he has written to this effect to Rockwell and will continue to apply pressure to uncouple V.Fast Class from Rockwell chips.
