According to sources tapped by PC Week, Apple Computer Inc intends to release a series of 68040-based Macs that will be positioned between the Quadra 950 and 68030-based colour Macs: scheduled for introduction in the first quarter of 1993, the 68040 Macs will be based on the same design as the forthcoming Performa 600 and Mac IIvx and IIvi, the sources said; the new class of 68040 machines is expected to replace the Quadra 700 and IIci, and both the 25MHz and 33MHz versions of the 68040 models will feature built-in Ethernet and a processor direct slot compatible with the Quadra 700, 900 and 950 slots; the new units are expected to ship with two NuBus slots and on-board video support for up to 16-bit colour on a 16 display.
