AT&T Co’s Largo, Florida-based AT&T Paradyne data communications equipment subsidiary, is claiming have achieved transmission speeds of 28.8Kbps over regular telephone lines, with a modem that it says conforms to the emerging CCITT V.fast standards. If the claims stand up, this means AT&T has not only achieved a higher speed than any other company working on V.fast – the Motorola Inc and Telebit Corp products, announced in April, had quoted speeds of 24Kbps and 23Kbps respectively – but it says that it is also the first company to provide 28.8Kbps modem test results using actual kit, rather than with simulated modem modulations. The test results have been passed to the Consultative Committee on International Telephony and Telegraphy, CCITT, and AT&T has said that it expects products based on the technology to be available in the second half of next year.
