A White Paper on telecommunications published by Japan’s Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications has said that the number of car and handheld cellular telephone subscribers rose by 61.5% to 1.09m in 1991 compared with 1990: it also found the number of high-speed digital leased lines increased by 32.1% to 12,883 circuits, and that the new common carriers increased their market share for long-distance calls to 15.9%.
