AT&T Corp has formed a joint venture called Rosnet International with Moscow-based Rosnet, the Russian Telecommunications Network. AT&T holds a majority share of the joint venture. Rosnet International will provide data services over public networks including X.25 packet-switching, X.28, TCP/IP, Frame Relay, electronic mail, X.400, facsimile, telex and teletype. The joint venture represents a major investment by AT&T in an area from which it had previously been largely absent. AT&T expects Rosnet International to be generating annual turnover of over $100m by the end of 1997. AT&T already has two joint ventures in Russia. Rosnet is a major supplier of data communication services to subscribers in Moscow, St Petersburg and western and southern regions of Russia. It has been designated as a preferred supplier to government entities in Russia. The joint venture agreement also includes Intercon International Inc, a US company that is to be responsible for marketing the new services.
