A change of emphasis appears to be emerging between IBM Corp and Motorola Inc’s PowerPC processor requirements. IBM’s attention is taken up with 64-bit implementations, such as the 620 and 630, while Motorola is more interested in pushing performance in the 32-bit arena. There are no details yet, but our source said we should expect Motorola to announce a follow on to the 604 before the end of the year. Of course it is possible IBM is working on something similar. The move would mark the first of the expected divergences between the two companies’ mainstream offerings. Until now they have both concentrated on embedded processors.
