You may be tempted to go for the Internet as a training medium but CD-ROM will remain the system of choice until after the new millennium. A report from New York-based researcher Datamonitor Inc puts CD-ROM at the top of the list of ‘which delivery platform is most popular’ and says it – and other forms of standalone training media – will stay there at least until 2005. Other forms of hi-tech training, such as videoconferencing and the Internet, will see a steady rise as companies like Macromedia Corp, Asymetrics Corp and Aimtech Corp increase the availability of cross-network authoring packages. In fact, it is expected that the proportion of Internet, Intranet and videoconferencing training – now barely 1% of the typical company’s training budget – will rise to nearly half within ten years. A considerable growth in networking tools is also forecast, with a predicted increase in smaller companies using their and other’s intranets. The demarcation between market shares will become less distinct by 2005, says Datamonitor, suggesting a more competitive marketplace for multimedia training suppliers in the future.
