The Asia Pacific server market has reported an increase of 25.6% in shipments and 26.1% in revenue in the second quarter of 2011, according to Gartner.
The spotlight remained on the China market, where servers shipped to China increased 33% from the same quarter in 2010 while revenue was up 29%.
Gartner has attributed the growth to the internet companies in China which continued to build up their cloud infrastructure, a driving factor for healthy server demand in the second quarter.
Other countries in the Greater China sub-region, Hong Kong and Taiwan, also reported growth of 16% and 12% in shipments respectively, however revenue increased at a faster pace, 29% and 32%.
Other major markets, Singapore, Korea and Australia witnessed continuing improvement in virtualisation adoption during the second quarter.
All server categories, including RISC/Itanium Unix, mainframe class and x86-based, saw positive revenue growth in the second quarter of 2011, and the x86 server segment continued to gain market share in both shipments and revenue, compared to both last quarter and the same quarter last year.
The x86 server segment represented 65% of total revenue and 98% of total servers shipped in Asia Pacific, compared to 61% and 97% in the second quarter of 2010.
Further, high density servers, known as skinless servers by Gartner, were preferred by Internet companies in building their cloud infrastructure.
Blade remained a higher growth category compared to other form factors, rack optimised and tower, as a preferred platform for virtualisation in large and mid-size businesses.
HP continued the top spot in shipments with 27% of the total Asia Pacific server market for the quarter, and followed by IBM with 37%.
