Digital Equipment Corp Kiev has won a tender set up to find a supplier for a wide area network for the Friendship oil pipeline. The project is being carried out in co-operation with Ulysses, DEC’s largest partner, by personal computer sales. Completion is due either this month or next. The pipeline is 440 miles long. The network consists of eight sections and will unite the head office in L’vov with 20 stations situated along the length of the pipeline. Equipment used in the project includes three Alpha 2100 servers (233MHz, 128Mb RAM), about 350 personal computers, concentrators, switches and modems. Oracle will be installed in the head office.
