Following its agreement with SkyTel Inc – and another one with PageNet Inc, Hewlett-Packard Co has formally launched HP StarLink, its wireless messaging service that transmits spoken and data messages, and news, sports and financial information, directly to the HP 100LX palmtop computer in the US: StarLink is expected to be available on April 4 and would-be users dial a toll-free number to get the complete communications package and automatic connection to the StarLink service; the National Dispatch Center Inc will serve as the central message-control facilityl; the basic $11 a month service provides message retrieval, message forwarding, bilingual operator dispatch, timed transmission of messages and group messaging; the local service offers coverage in the customer’s metropolitan area for $20 a month and up, and includes 100 computer-transmitted messages per month; regional service costs $37 a month and US national service costs $63; you also need a Motorola Inc NewsCard with software, costing $230.
