Starlight Networks Inc, Mountain View, California, has announced a souped-up version of StarWorks, which is claimed to support 90Mbps transmission of multimedia data when used with Pentium PCI servers. StarWorks is the firm’s rewritten Ethernet network operating environment, optimised for simultaneous access to video data (CI No 2,374). The new version is designed to enable Pentium PCI servers to become true multimedia servers, and the company claims that that the 90Mbps speed makes them suitable for applications such as real-time corporate broadcasts, video production, and financial data delivery. Between 10 and 70 users can receive MPEG video using the new version, according to the company. StarWorks 90M is said to support network operating systems including Windows for Workgroups, LAN Manager, AppleShare, and NetWare, and is to cost $30,000. The initial release can be used over 10Base-T Ethernet and 100Base-T Fast Ethernet networks, and support for FDDI will be added in the near future according to the firm.
