France-based mobile, fixed, IP and optics technologies provider Alcatel-Lucent and Mobily have successfully completed a 100-Gigabits (100G) live trial in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to meet the Kingdom’s increasing demand for access to high-bandwidth data applications.

Mobily is the trade name of Saudi Arabia’s second Telecommunications company Etihad Etisalat.

The completion of the trial forms a key step for Mobily in delivering new mobile broadband services including video-conferencing and high-resolution image transfer.

Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G offering is expected to enable transferring massive amounts of data at superfast speeds and will deliver high-quality service.

It will also offer lower network complexity, operating costs and power consumption and will allow Mobily meet customers’ increasing network needs.

The Alcatel-Lucent 100G offering used for the trial is part of its converged backbone transformation (CBT) application which has combined IP and optical transport technologies, and is based on the company’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS).

Mobily expects that the introduction of 100G will allow it to meet the ongoing business and entertainment broadband needs of both current and new customers, which will help it increase its subscriber base in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
