Trident Microsystems Inc has announced the TGU19680 graphics and video accelerator. It can overlay true colour – 24-bit – live video onto a graphical image of any colour depth using only 1Mb of memory instead of the standard 2Mb, a company spokesman said. The chip is based on the Mountain View, California-based company’s proprietary algorithm that requires less memory back-up. The 64-bit architecture is ideal for integrating onto a motherboard with a Pentium CPU, it said. The TGUI9680 accelerator chip supports up to 4Mb and integrates on-chip 135MHz pixel clock and its support of mixed-mode video playback and graphics uses the VESA Advanced Feature Connector or Peripheral Component Interconnect. It is priced at $29 per chip in quantities of 1,000 a month.
