Smyrna, Georgia-based battery innovator AER Energy Resources Inc is now shipping its first product, the AER Energy Power 220, a rechargeable zinc-air battery that it says can power portable computers up to 10 times longer than conventional batteries between charges: the battery stores about 240 Watt-hours equivalent to a phenomenal 200 Ampere-hours at 1.2V, which compares with 0.67 Ampere-hours for the best Nickel Cadmium rechargeables we can find for our portable compact disk player; it actually delivers 12V, which means 20 Ampere hours; it has no memory effect, so users can charge it battery at their convenience, in contrast to conventional portable batteries which, in many cases, manufacturers recommend be fully exhausted before recharging; you pay for it though – it’s $650.
