Telecommunications service provider SFR France has selected Cisco Carrier-Grade Internet Protocol Version 6 (CGv6) offering as a first step in the transition of its IPv4 network infrastructure to IPv6.
SFR has deployed the Cisco ASR 1000 Series router, enabling IPv6 access to the Internet for residential customers.
Cisco said that the ASR 1000, which utilises Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (LT2P), enables SFR to leverage its existing investment in IPv4 network access infrastructure to provide IPv6 services to their customers.
The IPv6 over L2TP approach requires limited investment and impact on existing infrastructure. Additionally, dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 services on the Residential Gateway (customer) side are enabled, said the company.
The offering enables IPv6 sites to communicate with each other over an IPv4 core and reduces the lead-time to IPv6 deployment for service providers while protecting their existing network investment, the company said.

Malaysia is one of the few countries to have pledged to move to IPv6 by 2012.
