Northern Telecom Ltd of Mississauga, Ontario won an order from Jackson, Missisippi-based WorldCom Inc for fiber- optic equipment valued at $500m to enable WorldCom to extend its network over the next three years. WorldCom said the network expansion will support a range of voice and data access services, Internet access, video transmission, and multi-media applications. It will use Northern Telecom’s Synchronous Optical Network transport equipment, including S/DMS TransportNode OC-12, OC-48, and OC-192 optical amplifiers and network management products and Information Networking Architecture. AT&T Corp spin-off Lucent Technologies Inc also won a $35m contract to provide WorldCom with its single-mode optical fiber and fiber-optic cable. Lucent will provide over 2,000 route miles of optical cable.
