Novell Inc plans to maintain its research and development spending at about 17% of revenue as it seeks to make up lost ground in the Internet and intranets businesses, Vic Langford, senior vice-president of Novell’s Internet and Intranet services unit told Reuter yesterday. He pointed out that that level of spending had had to include WordPerfect work in 1996 which it sold earlier this year to Corel. The company expected to maintain its 63% share of the global network operating system market, despite Microsoft Corp’s competition, he said, noting that Novell currently spends over $20m on advertising and promotion a quarter.
