The Louisville company is rather overshadowed by EMC Corp (CI No 2,414) – which now claims a whopping 17% of the IBM Corp mainframe disk market, but Storage Technology Corp is finally shipping its Iceberg disk arrays, and Ryal Poppa told Reuter that 50 Icebergs have been shipped and 38 are installed and operating. The company has another 105 in inventory and is building 10 a week and expects to ramp up to 20 a week by the end of the year; they cost $5 to $7 per Megabyte or around $1.25m to $1.7m each, and StorageTek has 250 Iceberg systems on order, including the 50 shipped. On the company’s current outlook, between $500m and $700m could be added to revenues this year, Poppa said; the company’s shares jumped $3.125 to $28.25 on the chairman’s words.
