IBM Corp’s unit sales are 45% up on the previous year, when its market share was only 6%. Hewlett-Packard Co’s unit sales are 4.5% up on 1992. In terms of money, IBM Corp’s market share jumps to 13% from 7%, while Hewlett-Packard’s share falls one point to 13%. Sun Microsystems Inc unit sales are up 25%, while the Spanish company, APD SA, unit sales are down 24%. Of the remaining companies AT&T Global Information Solutions Inc moves up one place in the league and Digital Equipment Corp and Data General Corp also improve their positions. Meanwhile Unisys Corp and Convex Computer Corp drop into the others category. Comapagnie des Machines Bull SA and Silicon Graphics Inc, however, emerge from 1992’s also-rans. Cray Research Inc maintains its ninth position, but its unit sales and turnover are down considerably on 1992. IBM and Hewlett-Packard fight over first and second position in all the segments of the Unix market, with the exception of low-end workstations, where Sun leads the way with a 38% market share calculated on the basis of unit sales, followed by IBM with 31% and Hewlett-Packard with only 15%.
