Shiva Corp, the remote access specialist based in Bedford, Massachusetts, has announced its push into the enterprise arena with the release of the LanRover Access Switch for large-scale analogue and ISDN remote access. Designed for secure remote access via T1/E1 and Primary Rate Interface lines, LanRover Access supports more than 100 dial-in users and is targeted at enterprises, Internet service providers and carriers needing to deploy large central site remote access systems. Shiva claims it is already installing the switch at American Express, Turner Broadcasting Co and Deloitte & Touche among others. According to the company, LanRover Access offers a combination of multiprotocol routing, data switching, PABX-style call control and client-server functionality, alongside the ability to migrate to Frame Relay or Asynchronous Transfer Mode. The product contains a Smart Detect feature that enables a single phone number to be used for analogue and ISDN dial-in remote access over single or multiple T1 Primary Rate Interface lines. A variety of Tariff Management technologies are also on show to reduce remote access costs through bandwidth control, connection control and data control. They include virtual connections for client-to-local network environments, which Shiva claims enables dial-in users to take advantage of ISDN’s fast call set-up times and performance while minimizing wide area network connect time costs by keeping dial-in links active only when actual data is being sent. Security is high on the agenda with Shiva stating that LanRover Access supports a range of third party products as well as internal facilities to enable users employ a centralized database to store authentication and authorization data. Using Radius, users can also collect detailed information such as customer ID, type of service, number called and connection parameters. In addition to Windows, users can manage the LanRover Access Switch and backbone network components on a common Unix or Hewlett-Packard Co OpenView system. It costs $23,000 and includes all the software necessary to implement multiprotocol remote access including an unlimited license for ShivaRemote 4.0 client software.
