After being dumped by Microsoft and Red hat, Oracle has said that it will stop developing applications for Intel Itanium microprocessors.

Oracle said that it is ending software support for the microprocessors after extensive discussions with Intel senior management. The company said that Itanium microprocessors are nearing their end and that Intel is concentrating on developing its x86 product lines which are much faster.

Itanium is a family of 64-bit Intel microprocessors that implement the Intel Itanium architecture, which was jointly developed by HP and Intel.

The latest in the line is Itanium 9300 series processor, which was launched in February 2010.

According to a Reuters report, Oracle said it will continue to provide support to customers for existing versions of Oracle software products that run on Itanium microprocessors.

In 2010, Microsoft announced it will stop supporting the Itanium, and that it would also discontinue development for other Itanium versions. Red Hat made a similar move.
