Two people separately contacted our sister publication PowerPC News last week, asking whether we had heard of rumours that Atari Corp will use the PowerPC in a forthcoming machine. We had not – but Atari had, although it said there was no truth them. There are a couple of variants to choose from. One story has Atari re-entering the personal computer market with a PowerPC version of the ST. Atari says it continues to monitor the personal computer market, but has no concrete plans at the moment. The other rumour has the next generation of its Jaguar games console using a PowerPC processor instead of its proprietary 64-bit RISC.
