Google’s online video service YouTube said it has bought Irish video technology company Green Parrot Pictures to improve its quality of video stored on the site.
However, Google has not revealed terms of the acquisition.
Green Parrot specialises in providing intellectual licensing and high quality picture manipulation technology that YouTube hopes will make video clips sharper, steadier and lower in image noise.
The technology allows removal of flicker and blotch, video stabilisation, colour transfer and slow motion, among other forms of restoration and enhancement to videos uploaded by users.
The Dublin-based digital video firm’s technology has been used in Hollywood movies, such as "X-Men", "Lord of the Rings," and "SpiderMan".
Green Parrot was founded by Chief Executive Anil Kokaram, who is also an associate professor at Trinity College in Dublin.
Google video technology director Jeremy Doig wrote in a blog post on Tuesday that Green Parrot’s technology helps make videos look better while at the same time using less bandwidth and improving playback speed.
