Mountain View, California-based First Floor Inc has introduced Network Central, claimed to be a network operating system-independent offering for segmenting corporate networks into workgroups. It is essentially a Windows-based low-end groupware package that acts as a ‘virtual filing cabinet’, enabling groups of users to organise and share files. The company believes it can be installed by users rather than network administrators. Organisational tools enable users to share views of file organisation; file descriptions; annotations; and automatic change flags to indicate when files were modified. It is said to detect network servers automatically and respond to existing network security. Network Central is available immediately, at an introductory price of $100 for two users.
