NEC Corp has added three more models to its evergreen PC-9800 series. The entry-level multimedia PC09821Ce2 has a double-speed CD-ROM and stereo speakers, a 1,024 by 768 high-resolution 5 screen and an Intel Corp 80486SX CPU. It has been priced down by 71% of the price of its predecessor machine. The price of the basic model is $2,637, or $3,080 for a 170Mb hard disk model with a CD-ROM. At the same time NEC announced a new B-5 sized notebook which weighs 3 lbs 10 oz and has popular Japanese programs IchiTaro word processing and Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet pre-installed. It also comes with a 8.9 liquid crystal display, is based on a 33MHz 80486 chip and is priced at around $3,000. Another notebook also released was the PC-9801NS/A, designed for expandability and more capacity, with main memory expandable up to 19.6Mb, and choice of 120Mb and 340Mb models, and a slot for a PCMCIA card. NEC plans to ship 250,000 units of the multimedia model and 180,000 units of the notebook models in 12 months.
