Facebook Europe vice-president Joanna Shields has announced that the number of registered users in the UK has hit 30 million.
There were only 150 million registered users in Facebook in January 2009. Since then the numbers have grown rapidly along with new applications and features. Facebook has also acquired many smaller companies in the two years and has turned its attention to mobile phones as well.
The social networking site founder Mark Zuckerberg had predicted last year that Facebook will have one billion users. It already has more than 500 million registered users, of which at least 10% are from Europe.
In the last eight months, the site added four million users in the UK alone. In France, Facebook has 20 million users, while in it is 16 million in Italy.
Last month, a study by Internet tracker eMarketer had predicted that majority of adult US Internet users are on Facebook, with 42.3% of the entire population logging into the social networking site in the month.
The eMarketer report says that more than half of internet users in the US were logging on to Facebook at least monthly as of the end of 2010.
