IBM Deutschland GmbH yesterday announced that it would be reporting a loss for 1993 as a result of one-off costs related to job cuts, but claimed that its operating results improved last year compared with 1992. Its sales fell 8.7% to the equivalent of $7,400m due to the weak economy and structural changes in the sector, it said. There are another 30,000 job cuts to be made worldwide in IBM this year, in addition to the 10,000 to go with Federal Systems, and much of the pain is expected to be taken in Europe. The UK is due to announce figures – and perhaps a new round of job cuts – today.
