IronKey, a manufacturer of managed mobile computing offerings, will provide Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with IronKey Enterprise to secure and protect active patient records.
The company said consultants, midwives, nurses and information analysts can now carry sensitive data without risking violating the UK Data Protection Act or the Department of Health’s Information Governance (IG) Toolkit if a device is lost or stolen.
Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust acting head of IT Ben Everitt said when data losses in other public sector areas hit the news headlines, the Department of Health issued a mandate via the IG toolkit which meant the Trust’s IT team took the required steps to not only protect all data stored on USB drives, but also to ensure we achieved Level 2 of the toolkit.
IronKey claims that the tool allows NHS Trust’s IT team to track and record the IronKey in case of device theft, before remotely destroying all data held on the device and even the IronKey itself.
With cloud-based IronKey Enterprise offering, the IT can easily manage devices and enforce device-specific policies, including password strength, password retry limits and on-board portable applications.
IronKey EMEA VP Colin Woodland said the Information Commissioners Office recent fines of organisations for data loss has simply highlighted the intense scrutiny that IT departments are under to find a way of protecting data.
