Amazon is to hire more than 1,500 employees across its eight UK and Edinburgh centres to meet customer demand during the Christmas and holiday season.

The jobs will be available at the retailer’s fulfilment centres in Doncaster, Dunfermline, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay.

Amazon director of operations Catherine McDermott said: "As we continue to expand our UK operations, we expect many hundreds of these temporary associates to move into permanent positions as has been the case in previous years," McDermott said.

Amazon noted that customers ordered a total of 3.5 million items in 24 hours at a rate of 44 items per second on the busiest day during Christmas season last year.

The company is planning to hold more products than ever before at its UK fulfilment centres this year. It created 10,000 seasonal jobs for Christmas season last year.

Amazon, which offered permanent employment to 1,000 temporary staff till January this year, plans to offer permanent jobs for 500 temporary associates by the end of 2013.

Since 2008, the company has opened five new fulfilment centres in the UK.
