A flaw in Apple’s mapping application directed drivers onto the runway of Fairbanks International Airport in Alaska, US, when sought directions for the airport’s car parking area.
In the past three weeks, drivers who followed directions via the iPhone app moved onto the taxiway as well as crossed the runway and had driven to the airport ramp side of the passenger facility.
Fairbanks International Airport chief of operations Melissa Osborn was cited by Alaska Dispatch newspaper as saying that the airport had complained to the Apple three weeks ago by means of the local attorney general’s office.
"We asked them to disable the map for Fairbanks until they could correct it, thinking it would be better to have nothing show up than to take the chance that one more person would do this," Osborn said.
Upon multiple incidents, the airport has blocked an aircraft access route, as well as erected barricades to ban access to the taxiway and they would only be removed after Apple fixes the issue.
Prior to the current issue, Apple’s mapping app for iOS 6, was alleged of sending users in the wrong directions as well as showing wrong landmarks.
