Display units of Samsung and LG have agreed to end their battle over display-technology patents and now plan to explore cooperation.
As part of the agreement, both firms would start negotiations to cross out lawsuits over LCD and next-gen organic LED display patents.
Both the South Korean panel makers had sued and countersued each other alleging patent infringement since 2012 as they competed to introduce the latest display technologies to market, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Prior to the latest move, Samsung claimed that LG infringed seven of its display patents, while LG considered banning the Galaxy Note 10.1 over alleged patent infringement.
Samsung’s Display unit delivers screens for Galaxy smartphones, tablet computers and televisions, while LG Display manufactures screens for Apple iPhones and iPads, in addition to LG’s smartphones.
According to both firms, the smart move would be to collaborate on display technology and build up the Korean firms’ standing in the display business as overseas rivals continue to pressurise.
