The Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) has hacked the Twitter and Facebook accounts of satirical US news website, The Onion.

The attack is latest in the series of cyberattacks launched by the Syrian group against media organisations.

According to the New York Times, the group supports Syria’s president, Bashar Al-Assad, and posted several anti-Israel messages to The Onion’s five million Twitter followers.

In a message sent to the New York Times, the SEA said recently The Onion has published an article that savages Syria and its current circumstances which hurt the feelings of many Syrians who relied on it to tell the truth in a funny way.

"We hoped that our effort to correct their news would draw attention to the fact that it was likely that an outside decision was involved in changing The Onion’s tune," the SEA said.

"The Onion can do a much better job reporting the truth through its satire. Unfortunately even they seem to be biased," they said.

Recently, the SEA has also hacked the accounts of other media organisations which include the Associated Press, CBS News, the BBC, Reuters and The Guardian.
