Sony chairman Howard Stringer has announced he will retire from his post in June this year.
Stringer became chairman of the board of Sony Ericsson in October 2009, replacing Carl-Henric Svanberg.
Prior to that, Stringer was CEO and president of Sony.
Stringer was quoted by the New York Times as saying he was ready to retire after passing on the mantle to Kazuo Hirai last year.
"I was pleased to hand the reins to Kazuo Hirai last year because I saw in him the right mix of skills to lead Sony, and I knew it was the right time to bring about generational change," he said.
"Over the course of the past year, he has come into his own and is leading Sony with vision and authority."
During Stringer’s tenure Sony struggled to compete with its rivals South Korea-based Samsung and the US-based Apple in the electronics business.
