Support offered to the Windows XP and Windows 7 for a number of applications has discouraged IPC customers from implementing the new OS in their devices.
IHS IPC senior analyst, Toby Colquhoun, said that he projects Windows 8 adoption will follow the pattern set by previous Microsoft operating systems.
"Widespread acceptance will take at least four years as IPC suppliers release new compatible products and end users gain confidence in using the new technology," Colquhoun said.
According to the report, the number of IPCs running a virtualised environment will increase at a compound average growth rate of 16%from 2011 to 2016, up from the present 12% for unit shipments.

Embedded variants of operating systems are expected to grow and sales of IPCs with Windows 7 are expected to increase compared to Windows XP in 2014.
