After Reddit, Mozilla, and adult entertainment sites Redtube and Pornhub, Twitter and Netflix have decided to join internet slowdown protest against the US Federal Communication Commission (FCC) plans to allow ISPs to prioritise traffic based on additional cost.
The protest takes place today (10th September 2014) and the participating sites will not slow down their websites, but only a "site loading" icon will be displayed which will inform users about the problem and prompt call to action for users to voice their opinion to the FCC.
The protest is to protect net neutrality which says that data packets on the internet must flow impartially, without regard to destination, content, or source.
Those who are opposing it claim that by allowing ISP’s to charge extra, big companies will try to squeeze the data of small players with money.
The European Parliament voted in favour of net neutrality but the FCC voted in favour of the proposal that indicated two- tiered internet where websites that were unable to pay the premium fixed by network operators for unrestricted bandwidth, would be subjected to slow connection.
