Japan has topped the global list of the countries generating highest app store revenues, and outpaced the US, fuelled by growth of smartphone and tablet games, a new report revealed.

According to app tracker App Annie, consumers in Japan spent 10% more than those in the US on apps for smartphones and tablets. The figure is triple that of app spending in South Korea and six times more than the UK, reflecting a transformation from normal ‘feature phones’ to smartphones.

Citing the report, The Japan Daily Press noted that the Asian country also spends more in Google Play and on Android apps compared to its counterparts.

Another report from Amsterdam-based game data research firm Newzoo noted that the generated revenue includes in-app content, while games were also cited as a massive growth area.

Japan’s spending on gaming apps quadrupled in a year, which brings it to the top of Google Play spending, with Android app spending remaining in pace with that of Apple’s iPhones and iPads.

Newzoo CEO Peter Warman noted that the adoption of smartphones is much faster than what expected.

"It’s fueling further growth," Warman added.
