NEC has such overwhelming dominance of the Japanese general purpose personal computer market that other manufacturers are having to find specialisations to turn a buck: Toshiba has found itself a niche with its lap-tops, and Fujitsu has decided that the best way to win big business with its FM-R personal computers and its K series office processor to make special function terminal systems for vertical markets; the K-10 came out in a 3770 point-of-sale terminal variant to considerable success last year, and Fujitsu now wants to create point-of-sale, banking, factory and transport terminals out of the FM-R; the pitch will be that the terminals will also run all the popular personal computer appli-cations, and Fujitsu also looks to the switch to increase its volume and reduce unit costs.
