IBM Corp says many of the claims Hewlett-Packard Co is making for its ‘Digital Workplace’ strategy are old hat. As far as its focus on photo copied pages and commercial printing goes, IBM says the reason organizations centralize their print requirements in the first place are because it’s cheaper, plus local workgroup printers are slow and run out of paper all the time. It says HP can only print around 40 pages per minute compared with its systems that can print hundreds. It says many companies already provide the forms-based technology it’s promised to introduce and while HP’s JetAdmin uses HTML, IBM, Lexmark and other print management systems are already Java-enabled.
