Comcast Corp, the third largest US cable television operator, has ordered Hewlett-Packard Co’s Broadband Interactive Data Solution, an end-to-end cable-modem system including the HP QuickBurst cable modem. The Broadband Interactive Data Solution includes installation and system integration and consists of a server complex that resides in the head-end – the cable operator’s broadcasting centre – and the QuickBurst Network, which connects the head-end to the home personal computer. The server complex provides network management, security and access control, content life-cycle management, subscriber management and broadband Internet access. The QuickBurst Network consists of a signal-conversion system that converts digital communications into radio-frequency signals and vice versa, along with the Hewlett-Packard QuickBurst broadband cable modem and a link protocol specifically designed to carry data over a hybrid fibre and coaxial plant at high speeds, with data security and network management.
