The global storage software market reported 1.4% rise during the third quarter of 2012 (3Q12) to $3.46b compared to the corresponding quarter in 2011, according to a new report from IDC.
IDC’s Worldwide Storage Software QView reveals that EMC, Symantec, and IBM topped the list of storage software suppliers with market shares of about 25.3%, 14.8%, and 14.7% respectively.
During the period, CommVault and Hitachi experienced the largest organic growth of about 21.8% and 10.2% when compared to the same period last year.
IDC Storage Software research director Eric Sheppard said that overall growth within the storage software market was suppressed due to reduced investments in Archiving software, Storage Infrastructure software, and Storage Replication software.
"This was offset by increased investments in Data Protection & Recovery software as well as Storage & Device Management software as companies continue to look for new features that enable modern data protection and efficient storage and device management," Sheppard said.
During the quarter, the revenues generated by data protection & recovery software rose 4.3% to $1.24bn while storage & device management software generated revenues of about $652.6m reporting a 5.1% year-over-year rise.
